  1. On the eve of Independence Day 31 August 1957, the Union Jack was lowered by En. Tahir Abdul Majid accompanied by the song God Save the Queen played for the last time as a sign of the end of the British administration in Malaya. The lowering of the Union Jack was greeted with a loud spontaneous applause and cries of "Merdeka" which rocked the whole field
